"Mako Shark II Shifting"
Jan-05-06, 09:53 AM (EDT)
LAST EDITED ON Jan-05-06 AT 10:00 AM (EDT)

I know that the Mako Shark II had an Automatic
tranny with the shifting on the steering wheel.

I have found that a few manufactures in the 50's
tried this theme. Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth, Ford
ect. Example: 1958 Edsel Pacer Conv. had what
they called the "Tele-touch" system.

I would love to figure out a way to adapt this
design to a GM set up.

If any of you have any ideas, I'm willing to
entertain your theories on how to accomplish
this.

Thanks
McBrain

The old belvediers had pushbutton auto but I only know it was used by some drag racers.

4 speed manual is a whole lot more fun.

I figured as much.

Plymouth has a 3 speed v8 tranny called Torque-Flite
but, how to link it with GM motor? I know theres got
to be a way of doing it "these days" without
sacrificing Horse Power.

I believe theres a way of doing it as an add on mod
without it needing to be any particular manufacturers
motor or tranny. Like an after market adaptation,
like a hurst shifter, without sacrificing Horse Power!

McBrain
I really have no clue though.

Why not just go ahead and drop in a HEMI ,then all you have to do is make motor mounts.

I'm a manual guy myself as well, but I am designing an electronic push button shifting system among other things on a race car that a small group of us are designing and building for our fourth year project. When I get some time I could try to figure out a way to adapt from one vehicle to another. I knew university would be good for something. Let me know what kind of tranny you want to use and which shifting system you'd like the best and I'll do some research.

Yeh- thats a F-1 style car if I remember right. Isn't that a whole different animal in regard to tranny and driveline??

Ya it is, but that's just my project, my degree is Automotive Engineering, which covers all types of automobiles, concentrates on personal vehicles though, cars pickups and vans and whatnot. So hopefully I have enough know how now to be able to help out.

Now thats an idea but, if I had my choice, I'd have
my cake and eat it too. Meaning, I'd prefer to stick
with a GM set up with no mechanical shifting,
Electric was what I had in mind. It makes it easier
to accomplish or so I was thinking any ways.

I just don't want to put some steeringcolumb or
tranny in from another vehicle unless theres no
other way to figure it out.

Nearly a decade after Plymouth figures it out in 56,
Corvette has it in the MSII only after the push
button generation has died off. The MSII used it as
a turn knob application where the horn would be.
They did it some how and kept a GM set up.

Reguardless, if their is a way i'd love to work with
it assuming HP won't be sacrificed.

Thanks to all thats posted so far.
McBrain

Gunner, I'm sure you will be an asset here with the knowledge you have, and are getting. That is ,of course, if your paying attention in class, and not partying too much, which alot of us, I mean, people do. Good luck. maybe you can help out with the joystick steering that would be fun to do.. Think of how clean your dash would look with push-button tranny and joystick steering.

Joystick Steering? Isn't that only on recent prototype cars?

And Maco Lovers we shall be, for Chevy my Vette for thee.
Power hath decended forth from thy Foot so our tires may
swiftly carry out thy command. And we shall flow a rubber
river forth to thee and teeming with Maco's shall it ever be.
