"'69 Can-Am "Patriot""
Sep-17-06, 09:04 PM (EDT)
The thread is now officially open...so that I can receive pressure and advice from all of you on this long overdue project. I've got pictures from a year ago posted on car domain at http://www.cardomain.com/ride/810541. The car went into hibernation last summer when the '75 needed so much work and $$$. I started the project with the name SummerTime Blues, but now have a more defined vision of where I am going with it. The car will be re-named Patriot because of the color scheme I am going to have applied. Also because I retired with close to 30 years of combined service with the good 'ol U.S. of A. green machine (US Army, Army Guard, & Army Reserves).

The engine in the '75, 350 with 3 deuces, and turbo hood will go into the '69 when it is time (after rebuild and reinstall of the '75 original engine). The frame is a "new" GM replacement frame that I have had powdercoated black. It is in storage awaiting full suspension (I believe the Stage IV from Vette Brakes...the package that has everything but the kitchen sink). Gotta find $$$$ for that one...

The body is about half way through the morfing into a real job instead of one that bubba created. It is an Eckler kit that was very poorly hung on the car, so much has to be done to correct past mistakes...

I've got to focus...I've got to focus...I've got to focus...

Wife says to tell you that the '87 vert I looked at is still for sale...

Man! This is killing me already...like looking at beautiful women and knowing that I'm just to old for that sh$t...gotta leave that to you young guys...focus here...more to come in this terrible saga. I hope that Keith doesn't declare that he already has his done and is out terrorizing the neighborhood...

Last words in fatal accidents for 49 of 50 states are "Oh Sh*t!" Final words in Wisconsin are "Hold my beer, I'm gonna try somethin'..."

Focus, man, focus!

Just had a top put on the 94 it set me back 1200!

I believe if you stay in the C3 catagory you will be better off.

Join the rest of us who have a car(s) apart and are working on them.

I have tried to spend time on my 73 every day and it is starting to pay off. A little here and a little there really adds up. I hope to finish my firewall by the end of next week if everything goes ok.

Your car will be a killer and like Rick and Andy's widebodies, they will draw a big crowd, you saw that for yourself at Carlisle.

Set a goal, it will be great for all of us to be on the show field at the same time.

"Randy"

Come on Guys...you are making it tough for me to stay focused with all these e-bay listings, and fantastic finds, but I have got to ignore all of the temptations...just don't have the liquid assets right now...gotta stay focused.

I've made arrangements to get into the body shop where Patriot is hiding out and take a few pictures, just to show everyone where I am and how far I have to go on the project. I am also going to look at a garage today here in Eau Claire where I work, so that I can bring Patriot back into my life.... The guy is asking $250/mo with utilities extra...can't swing that kind of payment as heat/elect will run about $150, so I'm looking at $400-500/mo for rent...way more than I want to pay. Will keep looking...gotta focus...gotta focus.

More to come...you all have a great weekend!!!

Okay...so Randy is getting lots of work done on his, and Rick is slaving away almost in silence, and I'm just too damn broke from all the fun had this summer...but here is where I'm at...see attached...

I just got off the phone with my body guy and he is touching the car again for a few days. Will be trying to come up with ideas for opening the headlight area up to conform with the shape of the Eckler light units. Plans are to cut the opening out on the sides of the body to blend with the sides of the unit, then cut the lip down in front to flush the unit with the leading edge of what was the bumper. If anyone has any comments, I'm open to suggestions, as he is going to tape the new opening and we will talk this coming weekend to discuss what will happen next before he makes any cuts to the 'glass. The grill opening will get some attention to clean it up on this splash of work to to done.

I am also transfering the title to my name and Rick...you would be proud...after corresponding with DMV for the past couple of days, I finally reserved "WDE BDY" as the only choice left that wasn't taken. So made a little progress in that area.

Well...here is the eye candy...

Its gonna be a killer when you are done.
Love the wheels.
You gotta make the lights come out smooth in the front or else the lip will take out some of your lightpath. I am sure you already knew that. My wagon has that treatment and it looks cool. I am in the process of doing that to Craigs car. I glassed the nose on first and set the lights. Last step it to elongate the bucket holes and mold it all in. Aint corvettin fun?

You just keep pluggin away and like i said, sometimes its more time than money.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I have struggled with the headlight treatment for over a year now, going from stock, to Toyota Celica, to modifying what I put in at the get-go. I am considering what you have advised, but want to visualize what effect cutting 'glass away from the surrounding area will look like. A recent e-bay car has a treatment similar to what I am looking at...see attached. I will be reviewing every photo I have captured for ideas. The bumper was removed and glassed in, but the reinforced metal behind it is still there, so I would have to notch that part out. With having to modify the area so much I may delete the headlight openings entirely and go with something in the grill, which will have a smooth finish to it when done.

This is one idea for a headlight treatment...

Wow Marv- looking good! that will look pretty bad-ass when done. Love the plate- good luck getting it. Love the 'steam rollers' out back. Seeing all these projects makes me think that I should do my Camaro. I was smacking into it last night in the garage running speaker wires in the garage. The thing is buried under tons of crap. What color are you going to paint it??

Marv......................... Great choice with the tag !!!!!!!!!!! You do realize that you'll have to pay me for using the "WDE BDY" on your tag too..............don't worry, you can pay me in monthly installments !!!!!!!!! LOL It will be really awesome to park together with the same tag !!! How will we tell our cars apart ?

By the way, all kidding aside........... your Can-Am is looking great ! The rear end looks just awesome with that spoiler ! The silver convertible you pictured is just awesome........... that's why I had sent you the link. The guys on "the other forum" were just trashing it.............but I fell in love with the look of it -- couldn't help but think of your's when I saw it !
