Marv- I have a 93' camaro at my body shop- I can take a closer picture of them if you want and take measurements. I think the Olds lights would work better. i think they are smaller than the Camaro ones. If you look close- they also have a plastic surround that, if done correctly, could be moulded into the grill area to look more stock + custom. Hmmm- I know your thinking of it now. Good luck sleeping tonight....Oh yeh- and ready for this one- Hmmm- 6 taillights, and, let me see, Oh yeh- 6 headlights. What a match. Notice the signal lights are the same size as the headlights. They will look like 3 headlights on each side. See you at the junkyard tomorrow....

I started looking at the Olds and Camaro headlight assemblies, but I found out that due to complications in WI laws and because of the way I am registering the car, I'm going to have to stay with the headlights at stock height, measured horizontally from the pavement.

My body guy never showed up for our meeting this weekend, so I am having to wait until we can connect to discuss the headlight situation. I spoke with a couple of guys over the weekend at a local show who had modified their cars with headlights in other than original locations and because of the laws here in WI, one guy had regular issue plates and was mandated to restore the headlights to the original manufactured openings...he changed his registartion to hobbyist. The other guy had a hobbyist plate which allows for a little more creative latitude, but he was told that the headlights must meet a certain horizontal height from the pavement and he had to rework his to meet the minimum ground clearance.

They both said that they had done something to attract attention, ie: loud exhaust, laying down a little tread, etc. Because I am applying for a regular license plate I must keep the car somewhat meeting the manufacturer's headlight height, so I will be looking at modifying the openings to make the Eckler units be acceptable. I am already out on a limb with no bumpers, but I'm hoping that if I get stopped for "excessive show of power" that the officer will so awestruck as to not notice the missing bumpers...

Hopefully I'll be able to get together with body guy this coming weekend to come to a decision on what to do with the openings. I am not willing to go to a hobbyist plate at this time because it is a green plate and I can't personalize it. By going to a regular personalized plate I lose some of the lattitude in what I can do to the car, but I get what I want for a plate...WDE BDY...

Maybe after I have the personalized plates for a year or two, I'll go with the hobbyist plate and rework the front at that time.

I sure appreciate all the help, advice, and ideas. I let you know when something breaks loose.

Air bag suspension. Pump 'em up when they want to measure them. Slam it after the authorities leave.

Oh yeh- interesting idea! That might work. They did that with me in Ct. The lights have to be 12" and above. I think I was right there, plus, I had to put the signal lights in, since there was none. They were nailing me for the sidepipes, as they are illegal here. I told him- they are factory, so tough. I never did register that car.....

North Carolina changed its rules.
Now If your Car is 35 years old or older, they no longer require state inspection. Also, you can run the "year of Issue" tag on your car.
I have a 1972 tag to run on the wagon starting in January. You still have to buy a tag and keep it in the car.

I have heard that they will stop this practice with the 1975 model year on inspections, as they need to still have the emission equipment.
Sort of stealing the thread, but relating to marv and his inspection delimma.

I am getting to the point of weighing the risk and saying to h*ll with it... 'Glass the original openings and customize the grill area with headlights and turn signals. I am more worried that the stopping officer would get me for loud exhaust than headlight height or no bumpers. The air lift idea is a good one though...

When my car is done, it will be so different from original that if I tell them it is so...it's gotta be right...owner's know everything...probably no one will know the difference anyway...except I did get the "look" when the guy was telling Dennis Gage all about "his Greenwood" at Effingham!!

Ok Guys...First of all...thanks to all of you who have generously given your time to research my questions and gave your opinions on my headlight treatment.

Second...I have been waiting for that money tree I planted in the back yard to start growing, but alas...one thing after another has kept it from producing. Something about watering it comes to mind...

We got ourselves into a couple of large dollar commitments that have taken all of our expendable resources for the short term, so while we are paying down some of the debtload, I have been doing my homework. Again, thanks for the ideas and encouragement. I have looked at and researched everything suggested, but I think it was Scott that suggested 6 headlights. Still in the planning stages and am trying to resource the backing/adjuster plates, but here is my artists conception of the direction I am going.

Will be talking with my body guy this weekend about this new concept.

What do you think?

I really like that concept. Personally, I would leave the lights open and not put any coverings over them. If you run 6 high intensity lights, they build a lot of heat and will make those covers sweat.
The drawing looks awesome.
keep it going..... focus
