"Hood latches"
Jan-27-05, 08:04 AM (EDT)
I have a bit of a problem. The hood on Dans Maco is held down with standard hood pins. Tacky but original. Can some of you post some of the different latches on your cars? I dont know if we will change these or not but I would really like to see som other ideas. Thanks TIM

I think we've talked about that before here on the forum... a quick search for "latch" didn't show what I remembered...

I have a stock Corvette hood release mechanism bonded to my hood. It opens with a standard hood release in the car.

It also has alignment pins & receptacles... you can see the pin in the picture above (the left side) and the receptacle in the one below.

Thats a sweet setup! My Maco lacks hood latches and I would love to
figure out how to do this myself. This setup doesn't exactly look easy to replicate.

I just realized what the alignment pins & receptacles are from... those are from the standard T-Top's. Clever.

I also remember where we talked about this... over at Randy's house with Johnny Maco present... looking at one of Randy's cars. He has a similar setup on one of his Maco's.

What happens if the latches fail and you can't open your hood, what do you do to get access?

David, one other question, Not to change the subject but, on my end it looks as if the posts have stopped counting and appears to be the same number reguardless of posts.

Freak out.

It's happened a couple of times... I found a place to press on one side that will pop it up on the other side, then from there I can reach in and pull the cable. That first time though, it took me about an hour to get it to open... was afraid I would break something.

I've learned the trick with mine though... there's a special way to close them that ensures they will open successfully the next time. I slowly close the hood, press it down to catch on the passenger side, then walk over and press it down to catch on the drivers side.

Its an easy fix, provided you know what to do.
Look in the wiper tray area behind the latch. there is a little plug.
If you remove the plug and take a bent screwdriver you go through the hole from the windshield side. The screwdriver pushes on the latch and you have your hood open! GM figured this out early on. You just have to open your wiper tray by using the manual override located under the dash. One switch operates the headlamps, the other operates the wiper tray, the knob in the middle stops the wipermotor.
If you have a long hood, then dont worry about the wiper stuff.
I can post a picture if you need more info.
