I'm a little confused, too... the Short tail is shorter on the back (~13" if I recall), the most obvious feature being that the rear wheel well encroaches upon the door opening, so that the door actually bears part of the rear wheel flare. Also, the tip of the fastback teardrop is closer to, or touching the rear kickup spoiler.

What puzzles me is that it would seem that the wheelbase itself would have to be shorter in order for the rear wheels to be closer to the door, but the only "talk" I've heard about the "shortness" is regarding the physical rear of the car, the bodywork specifically. But if the rear wheels didn't move, why then does the flare move forward?

There are a couple of threads in the Mako section. There's an awesome blue/silver Short tail that is really coming together.

Tim, you are not that confused the tail didnt move forward and shorten the wheel base as it would have to infringe in the door,
Silva made a door cap that just made the door longer and cut on the
trailing edge at a different angle,

so the short tail looks more like the bob tailed Cheeta rear...

Here you go Tim,
See the car isnt shorter the door cap is longer and different as seen on this candy car and then the pearl car is normal doors the rest looks the same to me,

Interesting... you cleared that up perfectly. That being the case, I think the candy car is NOT a short tail, although it clearly uses the door cap as you referenced. The point of the fastback stops maybe 6"-8" prior to the rear spoiler; it's my understanding that the short tail cars have "0" space between these features.

I suspect the door cap was used to make wider rear flares look more "normal" at the front edge?

Hi all- mOne of the reasons the flares may look close t the door is that the wheelwell openings are larger diameter by I belierve 2 1/2 inches. I believe my Silva built car to be a short tail, but he never mentioned that word. I do not have room for a spare because of the rear shortening. So, does a long tail have a spare? John told me to buy a can of flat fix to carry with me. Gotta love that concept. Style rules.
I dont think that white pearl car has larger wheel wells, and the fronts look like a smaller diameter by a slight bit.

Okay at that judgement point I can see what 2-4 inch difference and perhaps the lower part cuts in harder,
So that why the confusion not a big difference

couple of shots of my short-tail................

doors have extensions on them to give the illusion of the wheels being moved forward and the rear deck is about 6 inches shorter than the standard length ! They also had to shorten the frame.
