Rick,

Question on your rear carpet treatment... did you do it yourself (cut and sew), or did you use a kit that was for a hatchback model C3, like a '79-'82? I've been wondering about how to do the carpet and I think the hatchback kit might work just fine?

~Tim

Thanx for the compliments guys................. I'm pleased with the way it turned out ! I bought the 80/20 carpet from Wilcox and I wanna tell you this carpet is the best I've ever installed !!! This molded carpet is perfect, fitting exact over the 3 layers of Fat Mat I laid first. I bought the standard set for a '76 vette plus extra, so I could finish the rear. I didn't even use the bottom piece for the rear, just cut and fit the extra to finish the back.

Keep in mind, this is a short-tail......... so I don't have a lot of space from the back of the storage doors to the gas tank ! I added aftermarket seat belts and got them looking like a factory install............. which is the look that I wanted with the whole thing !

Rick

Oh yea............... I installed the equalizer/booster and am REAL Happy with the sound.............. had one years ago and its amazing how well you can adjust the sound.

The only problem I've got now is I can't get the CD changer to work......... I've misplaced the instructions and can't figure out how to play the CD's thru the stereo. It's a KOSS unit which came all together and there are no buttons on the detachable faceplate to play the CD's............. even my neighbor (who owned a stereo shop for 17 years !) doesn't know ! Koss doesn't make stereos anymore and I can't find any instructions on line. Hopefully, I'll run across the user instructions sometime.

Just amazeing some of the thoughts & idea's that have been done to these maco's for the back part of the interior ! the glass patterns interior carpet ect.

Rick very outstanding the way you put together a stock carpet set & molding to make the back custom , hat's off two'ya .

I would like to see more examples in full detail as most examples in the past have not been fully viewable for the back part of interior.

hI- aLL OF THIS IS WHY i DIDNT GO WITH THE PEAKED REAR WINDOW WHEN SILVA DID MY CAR, ALONG with the fact that it really was a daily driver. Hey, it was the 70s!! Mine retains the original removable coupe rear window. You may be able to use that setup along bwith a nboneyard roof section but moint it on an angle. It mat have to be moved a few inches foward to stay in the wide part of the peaked louver section. You could always borrow a windo or make a template of one. And it would be removeable. Mine never ever leaked either.
Anyway, heres what I learned, - I used an aluminium louver like the mustangs had that fits the stock coupe windo and deck dails. Thiese ideas may be applied to a lift up louver arrangement. The hinges are a slotted arrangement , maybe 3 inches long, horizonal to the ground to allow the loiver be pulled out to clear the roof back edge so it can swing up. It is surrounded with a peice if rubber to prevent scratching, so if using rubber, allow enough spacing.
As far as dealent, I learned years ago when I was a t top dealer to only use the best adhesives. The GE silicon or anything from 3M is what should work the best. I even used the GE to seal a half butt shower drain in my house and it works well.
Mine has two slide bolts that asre attatched to the deck surface that slide into a maybe 3/8 hole in each side of the louver. My bottom louver is spaced off the deck and I can slide my finger under it to move it. It is concealed when the louver id down.
I do not recall who makes these, . The contour will fit the rear edge of the factory roof. I cant say if you could make it fit, but if you could find one from a corvette accessory supplier, it would give you a base to start with, and vits a fairly sturdy structure. . You still have the glass to contend with.
As far as the class being strong enough asnd not cracking between the levels of the louvers, I think that a structure that does not flex is important ot it will be loosening bthe silicon seals. That safety glas is very strong. Just make sire there are no sparp edges touching the edges. I locked myself out of one of my cars once. It was freezing cold. I tried to kick the window in. No way. I went and bought a screwdriver and poked it and it shattered it . What a mess. Anyway. sharp edges will break it is the point.
I wonder how close the 64 to 67 vette coupe glass would be??

Skip, we all sure would like to see pictures of your car.
Those louvers were sold back in the 70s by T. Mechalis corvette parts and also ecklers.

Skip,
Do you still have this car?
Not trying to be a jerk but your posts for me would have way more merit if you had some pictures,
You can get a digital camera cheap these days and even most cell phones have cameras, then anyone with the smarts to make a forum post can easily post pictures too.

I could even go as far as sending you a Digital camera you fill it with pictures of your car then send it back to me and I will post your pictures in a public photobucket for all of us to enjoy.

Back to the threads topic...
I did for a brief time feel he same as you do that the stock rear window for a driver was better than the Mako kit rear window but I gauged that on the fact no one had a nice rear window on the mako kit, ( Even here we have only one finished example at the moment )

I also was building my first mako on a 81 with bubble back window and with the Cragar brand wrap around louvers it did look very Mako-ish

Far more so than a 68-77 coupe rear window would look with the flat louvers.
Allow me to shine some light on your confusion,

68-77 Coupe rear window louvers were no big rare item in the 70's into the 80's in fact Ecklers and other vette parts houses sold 3 different versions
One style just looked like blinds and went on the inside of the window, the next was formed plastic and stuck to the outside of the glass,
The last was a lift up louver that filled the stylish 68-77 rear window cove pretty much ruining the look of the car for people who like the cove while giving it a new custom flare,

See how much better pictures make a post?

Since I worked on my 81 I have changed my mind to some degree,
"Mako-ish" doesn't work for me.
I do support people building what they please but I have seen too many cars for sale being called a "Mako shark" some have no parts of the Silva kit on there car others might have just the mako front clip and perhaps the wrong bumper etc, so unless the car runs the full mako kit to me it is just a "custom"
So call it what it is a Mako front clip with custom rear etc....

Because I don't want to do mine 1/2 or 3/4 Mako I am doing the extra work to install the mako rear louvered roof part to a removable hard top ( I am building on a convertible )
The stock hard top rear window will stay in place, so my louvers will only need to be cut open but will not require glass of their own.

Cheers,
P.

27. "Been so long I literally forgot..."
Nov-25-11, 08:20 PM (EDT)
Here are some progress photos of my rear window treatment... I made a flow chart of the steps as I envision them; I'm working on Step 10 right now...

1. Tape off the area to be removed

2. Cut fiberglass with cut-off wheel

3. Remove old ledge for plexiglass window

4. Source 1" x 1" x 1/8" aluminum angle stock

5. Cut to proper lengths for hinge rail, and window channel

6. Cut slits in one side and bent the metal to follow the curves

7. Epoxy the channels in place

8. Source rear window hinge and metal insert for '81 Vette

9. Mold metal plate and hinge into underside of hatch w/fiberglass

10. Wrap channel w/fiberglass cloth to mold seamlessly into body

11. Drill holes for hinge assembly

12. Trial-fit louvered hatch

13. Prepare for paint

14. Backspray window ledge in body color

15. Mount rear flat glass w/window ribbon or appropriate silicone

I will need to figure out a latch system, but common sense says that the latch for the '81 'Vette is probably going to transfer over just fine... if not, lots of hatchback options out there.

'Glassing the aluminum angle channel to the underside of the sail panel... the hinge mounts into this structure. I'll continue to fill it out so that it blends with the sail panel.

Underside of the louvered panel. I sandwiched a 1981 Corvette rear window hatch hinge into the underside. The curve/contour needed only slight modification.
