I almost just said for you to call me, as this is gonna be long winded even for me...lolShawkRider,
To be honest there was a dream there but it never really blossomed into a project,
http://www.laser917.net is the Laser forum, it belongs to Winston but as you see I mod it,
I do know Tim Wacker and CSA fairly well and while I know that bashing of who ever is in office is a fun pass time for some I assure you that Obama had zero to do with CSA going defunct, one of the biggest reasons being is because CSA was dead long before Obama showed up,
I am not into politics and for me it has no place in a car forum, which are suppose to be about fun, as I have said before America is in a sad state of affairs when all we had to choose from were the clowns running, any vote was a vote for the lesser of two evils, neither fellow was worthy,
The other thing I notice is people get so blindly loyal to their party they loose sight and can't see the forest for the trees. neither party has been worth a flip for about the last 50 years,
A president basically can only do what congress will allow, and who ever won this time had a rather big mess to try to clean up,
Many republicans jumped ship due to Bush so ipso facto Obama won,
I have seen in other threads requests to keep on topic and since politics has nothing to do with Cars, I will move on back to cars,
I could spew myself blue trying to make CSA sound better but sadly the simple fact is Tim while a wonderful fellow was not a good businessman and even worse car designer,
His dream was to rework the Original Laser "D" body into a high dollar super exotic car,
I have never heard that CSA was going to use a Boxster chassis, but who knows what Tim might have said along the way, but the biggest reason that the Boxster chassis is impossible is it has a wheelbase just over 95 inches which the stock Laser shared with the VW donor but the CSA "new" Laser was a longer wheelbase car running a V8 in old school mid engine layout using I would guess a reworked Porsche or Audi and perhaps even Renault transaxle,
Here are a coupe pictures of the reworked Laser, I am told It has a longer wheelbase from the doors back, this body is the only one there is and I never received a straight answer if a mold was even pulled, I am guessing all you have seen so far are the computer drawings,
The work was done by Dan Melson who owns http://melsonmotorsport.com/
He was working as CSA's design department, and now has the original D body molds,
A colorful person with a wonderful history, I have spoken with him many times and consider him a friend,
However,
I have the same issue with his web site that I did CSA and that is presenting cars that they didn't build, in most cases cars they never even saw in person,
For example this is in my opinion the ultimate Laser, it runs a Porsche twin turbo engine and is a very top end build, yes, it is an original Laser 917 "D" body
This car is overseas and has no connection with Dan Melson besides being shown on his web site,
Last I talked to Dan he is offering a version of the T3 GT40 which started out as the Kellison GT40K, ( I own one of the Kellison GT40 K's )
He has one prototype T3 that is on a Fiero chassis but it needed some more finish work to be a nice car,
Dan also as far as I know still has that prototype long wheelbase Laser body,
And if a person went about it correctly he might sell it, but at a very high price tag,
As you know I staff www.priceofhistoys.com I have been into kits over 30 years,
The laser is a wonderful grass roots VW based kit car but like with all of them it has it's short comings,
When built it was thought it would always be a rare engine car, so the way the body and cockpit are set up they is enough room behind the seats to actually carry a few things, I would compare it in a way to the room in a C3 vette cross between 77 coupe and 78 bubble window,
This means placing a mid engine in the car isn't easy, people have done it, most cases you have a bulk head behind the seats and loose the area behind the seats,
I have seen it done a few times with the 425 transaxle but that platform is weak on safe good handling,
Winston was running a modern transverse engine and tranny in his project which is for sale but he paid too much for his chassis,
I have owned many kit cars and did own two lasers and sold one,
No, the wife wasn't part of the deal..
My red stink bug Laser
is something of an oddball, it has a heavy well built full custom chassis but still has all VW running gear and suspension,
I just wanted a cruiser and bought a Corvair 6 with Corvair auto tranny for a rear engine set up in mine that would have a bit more get up and go over VW but I have yet to install it and have been considering selling the Laser to help fund the Mako build,
I see lots of POS Lasers and a few good ones, if you really want one your first step is hit up Dan Melson see if he will get off the Long body for a fair price ( not likely )
Last I heard he wanted like 8K for a stock laser body which would be insane since a very sweet runner driver can be had 5K and up a few,
If you are wicked bucks up and want a more exact replica then hit up Fran at Race Car Replicas, he is a great guy and builds a wonderful car,
I hope this shines some light and the replies are car oriented not some silly waste of time political diatribes,
If anyone wants to talk more about Lasers or kits why not hit me up for my number and give me a ring,
Cheers,
P.
