Quite some time since the last update. This time only small steps about some parts which came in.

We was quite astonished how many faces were in the set delivered from Whitegauges.Net. Was almost faces to do the gauges for 2 Vettes. Additional single gauges can be purchased for 4$ …

I'm glad you guys like them.
I was really amazed how well they fit to the Mako curves.
Did yesterday another shot from top, because forgot to do that.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/156_Headlights.jpg
And one from the back which shows all the wiring:
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/157_Headlights.jpg
Of course there's also a cover for the headlights, but not assembled now.

In case some of you are interested, i purchased them by a german distributor.
But they're available by a californian distributor too, and in USA even way cheaper. I had to pay approximately 190$, and in USA they're only 139$.
Here's the link to the bay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/99-05-JETTA-CCFL-HALO-CLEAR-PROJECTOR-HEADLIGHT-HID-KIT-/130439723881?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3AJetta&hash=item1e5ed03b69

One big adavanage too, while it's for a VW Jetta the lights will be available for sure the next 10 to 15 years.
Availability is for me a pretty important issue for all the parts.

Greetings
Robert

  1. reliable, cheap and safe replacement for future

It didn't let me in peace that i couldn't find those lights anymore for a better price.
So went back to the bay and search more.
And guess ?
Yes i found them again for a unbeatable price of 105$ for the pair.

They're almost the same as mine, only the bar down the big beams is made with LED's instead like mine with a bulb.

Hi Guys,
finally me and Steven found some time to go further in the build up.

But first of all some parts came in, all in all pretty eavy package:
HEAVY DUTY 7-LEAF SPRING
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/064_7leaf.JPG
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/065_7leaf.JPG

LONG SPRING MOUNTINGBOLTS

NEW REAR ROTORS

http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/071_rotors.JPG

460LB FRONT COIL SPRINGS
I guess the need to be shortened a bit.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/12_assy_front/074_460lb_coils.JPG

Steve started over with assembling the rotors.
Means before that he had to dissasemble the old rotors from the hubs.
We decided instead of riveting the hubs to the rotors to screw them like many other sports cars have it.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/072_rotors.JPG
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/074_rotors.JPG
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/076_rotors.JPG

Next step was extensive cleaning of the old hubs.

http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/082_rotors.JPG
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/083_rotors.JPG

A good coat of POR15 over the hubs to give rust less chance.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/084_rotors.JPG

Testfit of new caliper.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/090_rotors.JPG

Testfit on the axle. Looks nice.....

Pre-assembling hubs into rotors.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/087_rotors.JPG

I started over with beginning of the grill inlay construction.
But 1st of all had to "glue" the frontend together with tape.
Man, specially the pieces inside the hood which gives some structural strenght will really need a lot of reshape work. They're made to big, guess had to be this way for individual alignment.

And yes, I WAS AMAZED seeing the headlights in the front.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/158_frontend.jpg
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/159_frontend.jpg

http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/161_frontend.jpg
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/162_frontend.jpg
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/163_frontend.jpg

Just placed the headlights in the frontend to see how they fit.
Finally they will be behind a cover, only the frontglas will be seen and all the mechanics and wires behind that cover. That cover will also give the whole lower part of the front more stiffness and stenght.

At the moment the cooling profiles which come on the domes are in the machine shop.
Should get them back on friday.
Then need to grind all the edges smooth and polish the edges.
Will put some photos of them at friday.........

As allways, any comments very welcome.

Greetings
Robert

Glad at least the crazy Mako-guys like the headlight assembly.
Many say it's too modern and some even say it's bling-bling.

Even when only i have to like it, you guys are my measurement.
So don't hesitate also to critisize.

Maybe when the grill is over the lights the modern lights will be somehow covered.
Still have a bit a space problem to solve. The inner pieces which support the hole front are on some points in the way of the lamps and the grill inlay.
But won't modify them before Steve didn't made a mold from.
As he assembles then the front pieces he will have to do that cutout.
The good thing, also the grillinlay will give more structural support when it's bonded to all the pieces.

I'm still fighting with the idea of putting a front-spoiler like yours Rick. I like it but don't know how well a standard spoiler will fit to the shape of the lower frontpiece.
But have still some time to let this idea settle.

Just a sneek preview.
Picked up yesterday the machined dome grills.
They look pretty cool, but do not ask me about the price for machining them. I was stupid not to ask before how much it will cost.
Well, we never stop to learn.

Of course couldn't resist to put up the complet frontend and also stick the emblems.

Next week i will start over with building 1st the front grill.
Haver to do that first to see how much space it needs and only then the grill inlay with headlights can be constructed.

Today 2 orders went out. Mainly suspension and wheel parts.
Wheel Spindle, With Disc Brakes, Rear, $259.98
Front Wheel Bearing & Seal Kit, $59.98
Rear Wheel Bearing & Seal Kit, $85.98
Wheel Stud Set, Front Or Rear, $19.90
Wheel Lug Nut Set, Chrome, $24.99
Wheel Spindle Flange Nut, Front/Rear,$7.98
Rear End Bearing & Seal Rebuild Kit. $141.99
Trailing Arm To Spindle Support Studs. $13.98
Strut Rods. Adjustable W/Polyurethane $109.99
Rear Backing Shield. Silver LH $26.99
Rear Backing Shield. Silver RH $26.99
Trailing Arm Bushing Kit. Polyurethane $99.98
Rear Shock Upper Mount Bolt Kit. $23.98
Front Wheel Bearing Cap $9.98

About the spindles more later. Steve teared them down already, they're not anymore usable. Too much wear from wrong installed bearings and other issues on the rear suspension.
Will put all that up on the website this weekend.

Hi Guys,

haven't had the time to update the website lately.
That's why now it's a major update covering the time from 20.otober till today.

In general i have to admit that i didn't like too much what Steve discovered with the rotors, spindles and bearings.
All the bushings and most of the bolts i ordered already new.
But there was a ton of more cost intensiv pieces which needed to be replaced.
Anyway, now almost everything is new.

Luckily Steve had already all the necessary tools to that inhouse, what saved a lot of money.

Some pictures of how the rear wheel assembly looked before.
Say idiots worked on this car !?!
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/097_spindle.JPG

One more. Could have become easily a disaster on the road !!!
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/162_cotter_pin.JPG

The new and old rear spring.
Went with a 7 leaf Ghymkana.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/099_leaf_spring.JPG

Good looking strut rods.
Will be replaced by new adjustable ones.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/109_shock_mount.JPG

One more great use of a cotter pin !!
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/164_shock_mount.JPG

Sure this car was very well adjusted, means maybe it steered just a bit over the whole road space ?
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/111_strutRods.JPG

Like always, Steve takes atention to detail and marks all the pieces.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/118_framePocket.JPG

Shot trailing arm bushings.

New bolt assembly for the trailing arms.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/119_framePocket.JPG

Decided to throw all the old calipers and ordered new stainless ones with o-rings for front and rear.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/126_calipers.JPG

Something is missing at the u-joint bolts ?
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/130_frenchLocks.JPG

Well yes, the french locks which should asure the bolts can't come off !

A piece out of the parking brake !
Explains why the parking brake had not a lot of use on the pads. But also why it didn't work at all.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/166_spring_brake.JPG

This maybe explains the parking brake problem better.
Makes any adjustment impossible.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/167_parking_brake.JPG

Here a overview of the parking brakes. Surface rust overall let's guess it was "out of use" !

Some of the new parking brake stuff.

Bad looking rear spindles.
More in next photos.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/137_spindle_damage.JPG

Must have made a lot of noise when driving with such wheel bearings !
Grease seal failed.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/159_grease_failure.JPG

Nice picture !?! And cost intensiv too.
Damage from bearing failure.

Shot rear spindle from all the bearing damage and no grease anymore.

one more.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/140_spindle_damage.JPG

This is just to show how the tool gets used.
Not really necessary as the spindles anyway get thrown.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/144_bearing_tool.JPG

Uff, at least the trailing arm is not looking bad and just has surface rust.

A good greasing is doing the trick.

Front wheel assembly. Not yet bolted together with the spindle nut.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/12_assy_front/107_front_spindle.JPG

As all the gas tank was restored to new condition it made sense to buy also a new gas tank sending unit.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/13_engine_transmission/439_fuel_sending_unit.JPG

Soon the body will go back on the frame.

Finally i made the long desirted progress with the Mako Shark Emblems.
They're out of metal. Yeaaahhhhh
The material is called ZAMAC and is often used for making car emblems.
It consists of Zinc, aluminum, copper and some other materials.

http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/174_emblem_right.jpg

Next step is now to have casted also the special made Mako Shark gaslid-door insert and the special made Mako Shark shifter knob.

Like allways much much more photos (this time 169 new pictures) on our website.
And comments, also critical ones, allways welcome.

As soon the body goes back on the frame it got time to have something to move the car with.
So i ordered new tires all around.
Got them from a store on Ebay.
The cool thing was that shippment is for free.
I will go with 235/60/15 in front and for rear with 255/60/15.
I think with this it should have enough space to the frame.

Steve is at the moment checking all the new assembled parts on the engine. Also the whole new fuel system and transmission lines with torque converter level.
Then he will pump the oil through the whole engine without firing up, just to make sure all is oiled before starting.
Well and then soon...... roooaaarrrrrr.
He will make a sound video to document how it sounds with the new fabricated sidepipes.
Can hardly wait that moment.

As some of you mentioned, the applying of the brushed gold faces on the gauges didn't came out so well. So nothing to show, means we decided not to show it.....
But he, nothing without plan B. The faces got reordered and this time will make sure it comes out as wanted.

Hi Guys,

Maybe some of you seen the Corvette Report from Scott Teeters and realised that in 2 Reports our build up got featured.
I admit, that was a pretty cool moment seeing our build in the Report.
To read the reports:
1st Corvette Report
http://www.corvettereport.com/motion-maco-shark-silva-maco-shark-gallery/
2nd Corvette Report
http://www.corvettereport.com/1974-maco-shark-corvette-build-project/

The differential received a close inspection, and it's fine to go.
Even when the bearings are still OK they got changed just because we allready had them. The old ones get stored for eventual future use....
Yes, i sayd UFFF....

http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/13_engine_transmission/456_differential.JPG

Finally some parts came in which were essential to go further with the build.
The "main part" which was missing for many weeks was a simple seal which is needed for the new tank sending unit.
Without it, no final assembly of the tank and no startup of the engine.

But now it's here and soon, well i'm extremely spanned on this moment, the engine can breath again since more then 1 year.
Also the chrome valve covers and some of the chrome pulleys, unfortunatelly not all could be used about measurement issues, got assembled. Together with some minor motor chrome parts.

Also the ordered tires and wheels came in.
As sayd in front 235/60/15 and rear 255/60/15, booth Cooper COBRA Radials.

http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/3_guide_lines/036_tires.JPG

For the wheels i went with aftermarket Corvette wheels 8x15 which came allready with Trim Rings and Hubcaps.
The Trim Rings and Center caps will go on Steves 70 Vette while my Mako will have to run with the 69 Hubcaps.

The rolling chassis is close......
All the time i still had a open eye for 30 spoke western wheels.
But now as seen how cool the wheels look with the original hubcaps i know my decision will remain by the hubcaps.

Hi Guys,

once again a major update.
Have had a bad pneumonia and trough it no power to do anything Mako or website related.
But back in the saddle now...

The differential got cleaned agian.
The guy who did the sandblasting didn't cleanded well enough !
Afterwards panted with POR15.

Next will be the rebuild of the power steering.
As a Rack and Pinion wasn't planned it get's rebuilt.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/12_assy_front/130_steering.JPG

AND FINALLY UP INTO FIBERGLASS.

As the steel frame for the watercooler is rusty it needs somehow a replacement. So we got two options.
Buy a new replacement for a lot of money !
Or fabricate a new one....as anyway in the motor compartment a lot of black glass will take place we decided to go with the 2nd solution.
So Steve began to fabricate a new frame out of fiberglass which then finally will be covered in black glass and look similar to carbon.

First step was to clean the frame:
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/177_radiator_support.JPG

2nd was to fill the gaps of rusted away material:
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/178_radiator_support.JPG
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/188_radiator_frame_filling.JPG
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/197_frame_bondo.JPG

A good waxing is the major task for later demolding:
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/199_radiatorframe_waxing.JPG

Fiberglass gets layed:
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/200_frame_laminating.JPG
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/203_frame_laminating.JPG
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/204_frame_laminating.JPG

The precutting of the black glass:
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/214_frame_blackglass.JPG
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/7_body_construction/218_frame_blackglass.JPG

This process is getting done for each side of the frame.
Then they new halfs out of fiberglass get inforced with metal parts on the inner side.
And finally booth halfs get bonded together as a new lightweight watercooler frame out of black fiberglass. Carbon-like liek the inner fenders and some other stuff.

As allways much much more information and in total 165 new photos for just this update on the website.
It's simply too much to put all here.

Any comments are appreciated.

Robert

Hi Together,

Finally managed to put again some updates. They're from end of june till today.
Was such a bunch of photos and information took me quite a while.
Have again to update more regularly that the backlog is not so big.
It's way to many photos and description, so really only a short "teaser" here.

One of the rear spindles looked pretty bad.
That was one of the reasosn they got trashed and replaced with new ones.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/279_bearing_damage.JPG
Da wir den Zustand schon gewusst haben wurden beide hintere Spindeln durch neue ersetzt.

The whole trailing arm with all it's components assembled on the car. Now the Vette really stands on it's own "feet".
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/11_assy_rear/333_rearEnd.JPG

On the website is the complete description how to rebuild the trailing arm and how to mount it on the frame.

As the steering sytsem leeked badly a complete overhaul was mandatory.
Some parts were ordered new and for the control valve a rebuild kit got ordered.
As the slave cylinder was allready at some point welded we decided to trash it.
I don't like to know there's a welding on one of my steering parts.

Here the welding can be seen, anyway not a really professional welding job.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/12_assy_front/131_steering_rod.JPG

The new slave cylinder and rebuild kit for the control valve.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/12_assy_front/149_steering_cylinder.JPG

The hoses was the main cause of leeking. Obviously they got trashed too and all 4 hoses were replaced with new ones.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/12_assy_front/133_steering_hoses.JPG

The control valve before it's rebuild.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/12_assy_front/136_steering_ControlValve.JPG

Completely disassembled control valve.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/12_assy_front/151_steering_ControlValve.JPG

The new parts which will go into the control valve.
On the website you can find the whole control valve in all it's detail with photos and description how to do it yourself.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/12_assy_front/150_steering_ControlValve_rebuild.JPG

Just a few pictures of the rebuild.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/12_assy_front/172_ControlValve_rebuild.JPG
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/12_assy_front/187_ControlValve_rebuild.JPG

Allmost done.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/12_assy_front/194_ControlValve_rebuild.JPG

The rebuild Steering System in all it's glory.
Simply cool such nice looking mechanic parts.
http://www.cybergate-corp.ch/mako_clip/12_assy_front/216_steering.JPG

This tim the updates include more then 100 photos and a ton of description to them.

Have fun with watching and reading.

Hi Together,

slowly we move to the interior work..

Ordered today some parts at Corvette America.

Part Year Description Pieces

custom| | Door Panel substrates with metal upper channel support RH | 1|
X2609 |1968-1977|Door Lock Knobs. Inside - Import Repro pair| 1|

X2032 |1969-1982|Door Handle Assembly. LH - Import | 1|
X2033 |1969-1982| Door Handle Assembly. RH - Import | 1|

Well, probably some of you ask, what means "Door panel substrate" ?
Before i will answer that i have to adress a BIG thank you to Corvette America, specially Jim W., for their great customer support.

As maybe some of you know, i want to have my interior pretty custom made out of black fibreglass.
Means also the door panels.
Now as my original door panels do not look anymore so fresh it was clear to do something.
Either way to tear down the skin and apply the black glass over the original.
But my door design shouldn't look exactly like the original, so i thought to ask Corvette America if it's possible just to buy the inner structure without any skin and inner polyurethane foam.
And yes, cool, it is. At least Jim made it possible for our project.

Now the new door design can be carved directly on the substrates and then covered in black glass (carbon-like).

As the substrates was really much cheaper then the complete original door panels and even cheaper then i expected, i decided to spend some of the money in new door hardware.
