With an older corvette, and a gigantic powerful enigine, doesn't it get too loud when driving hard?

GM used the right way "MAKO", "MACO" was used I'm sure to avoid being sued by GM....

The L-88 was a high compression aluminum headed 427 you could fake one pretty well but the radical L-88 cam and high compression would make it pretty much on the race side of streetable.
The one MAKO SHARK GM had that was drivable had the even rarer ZL-1, an all aluminum 427 yes, block and heads both, high compression race car engine, it was never meant as a street engine, However I read stories that Bill Mitchell did drive that ZL-1 MAKO on the streets and he was known as a local street racer...
If youre bucks up the 502 is the way to go if you do it on a budget like me yet want a big block 454 is a good out....
I will compromise for a while and run the big small block that's in mine...

Cheers, t.

There is a limited run of ZL-1's being produced again. Something like $20K for 1 of 200. You can buy a bare ZL-1 block from the original casting (with minor mods) for somewhere around $5 - 7K.

More than anything else im looking for a car with classic american muscle; Somthing with alot of torque that ya can really feel. Chargers, challengers, 428 stangs and big-block corvettes all share that same personality. I'm thinkin a 72 vette with a 454 would suit me fine, even a 427 would be a step up from the cars there making today with tini-wini plastic 2 liters.

Of course my comment "cars they make today" doesnt include ground-pounders like the 560lb-ft vipers and 350lb-ft LS1/LS6 cars.

(plastic 2-liters are fine for a daily driver)

Don't worry so much about special engines, they cost mega bucks.
You can find a 454. You can do a few mods and make it scream.
You can put a 150 HP fogger on it and away you go.
Don't try to buy a "Corvette" engine. You are paying way too much for something just for the numbers. You can buy a used 502 cheaper than you can buy a 1972 454 out of a corvette.
Emissions are an issue in some states. Check yours for the laws.
You can always put a blower on the engine. It works well too.

Uhh, change of plans (maybe).
I was puttin a little into researching the big-blocks, and some 1963 grand sport videos came up. I watch some and that car has blazing speed! I was on google.com and noticed there was one that was sold for 30k.. Is that the normal asking price for this rare car?

That would be a replica for that price. Check out the custom C2 section here for some pointers to them. There are coupes & roadsters both.

I love those things. When I have more garage room & cash, I'm going to get one those :D

My 66 had a Grand sport type kit on it not 100% but close,
I'll see if my dad has some photos,
It was back in a time that purists still said "why did ya ruin that vette"
the frame around the rear plate read "Here sssssssnake".

Then when the Cobra kit car bug bit the grand sport became the answer for chevy fans.
There were 5 real grand sports, they ate the AC Cobra at nassau,
but were 100% race cars as in body shells on frames not reworked street cars.
I never liked my 66 as much as the c-3's I am 6'3" and I realize the frames are basically the same but I just like my fit in C-3's better.

I got a question. I live right by a place with a Mako-Shark sitting outside in the snow. It needs restored. It needs a lot of interior work but it does have a engine, not sure on if it works. What would be a good price to try and get the owner to sell it. He looks like he wouldnt mind the money he isnt really well off. I am a current owner of an 88 custom corvette. I have owned the car since I was 16 and im currently 18. Im looking for a mako to hopefully either trade it in on or sell it to save up for one. Thanks for any info.

I dig getting a bargain,If the frame/pillars are rusted out it will need tons of work, depends on how much you want to invest to get a running car,
Snow country many times means rusted frames.
I'm not looking at how bad off it is or how nice it might be,
I'm not bashful I would start at 2500.00 if its a shell and work up from there, trashed driveable c-3's are cheap, I'm sure others on here will say I'm low balling the starting price but keep in mind I don't know this cars true condition....
Be careful about who you tell where it's at people will swoop in like little vultures to steal it out from under you.
I would love some pictures though....

Tylas right on that one. I don't think any regular posters here would snake it, but you never know who is lurking and not posting.
Get us some pictures. You know the price of a kit, around 6 grand if its a motion. The pics would allow us to better give you a guide to what's what on the car.
Find out, if you can, what year it is. This can be done by getting the serial number off of the windshield post on the driver's side just by looking through the windshield.
Start with pictures, we will be glad to help as best we can.;)

I agree with Tyla and Randy....
How long has it been sitting there? Does the person have anyother
high profile cars...if not they most likely don't know much about the car.

Look at the frame very closely!!!!
We went thru replacing the windshield post area on a 75 L-82....If you can get in the car...unscrew the little panels down in the floor board area...that will give you access to the lower frame area..reach in with your hand and look at it with a flash light also.

I used to get starry eyed in my kit car days, thinking about what "could" be when I would stumble across some unloved fiberglass shell in a field, but a person has to be realistic, I mean a car "can" be restored from say a door hinge up but that doesn't mean it's worth it,in most cases,Sure if the numbers came out to be a long lost L-88 or motion car then it is worth it to some people... the 1000.00 was a rare bargain on a mako body, or was it, what I always say is something is only worth what someone will pay, Ebay IMHO doesn't count as a true high end gauge on what something is worth because people go crazy like gambling not thinking money is real.
But in this case 1000 was all someone would pay...
I know you are saying you would have paid more but didn't know it was there, then bidding wars start and see what I mean?
I paid the ridiculous Motion price for my clip only because I wanted it then, I had looked for a year and found nothing.
So I have a true Motion performance from mako clip...so what?
People put value on the wrong things in life...
Last I heard the mako with vega tail lights was asking 20 or 25 grand and the recent blue one is asking 40 grand....any takers?

You're right on time with that one. I would possibly have paid more for the car because I have access to another doner car and I have the ability to do it myself. Again, I don't need anymore stuff right now, but these things are few and far between. Look at where we stand on our own projects. What if you had to farm 100% out. You would have a hundered grand in a driver. If you can do it, do it, if you are at the mercy of someone else, you are way better off buying a car thats already done, or at least driveable. My .02 for the day.

Hey, I assume people do their own work, shame on me, if they are bucks up enough to pay the way then just ante up for one of the driving Makos for sale and go wild....
That insane Merlin vette was "hired" out and he has well over 100 grand in that car.
Customs never sell for what's invested in them.
