Back to work on the short tailed car this week.
When I got it, the owner said the left rear wheel bearing was bad, so I took the trailing arms off. Man, thats a real job, not for the faint of heart. Craig took them apart and found the bearings all to be good, I believe his problem was that the parking break mechanism had come apart.
Anyway, both arms are out, someone had beat both of them with a big hammer and I must replace the arms. Luckily, I have a set of bare ones. I will get all of the parts on Saturday in Knoxville to completely rebuild both arms and some other stuff too.
I want to have it on the road this year.
I can post pics, but not much to see except two dismantled trailing arms and a car on jack stands.
:-(

Good luck rebuilding those trailing arms and keep us posted on the good work. I would be interested in any closeups you take of the tailing arms before and after the work. I'm sure i'll have to get into that area and it would be helpfull to see examples so i know what to do when i look at them to know what needs the work.

Thanks and good luck.

Rebuilding trailing arms is next to impossible unless you have the special tools. Craig is a mechanic by trade and has invested in them. Check the Eckler's catalog for pricing on the tools. Most people just buy rebuilt units on an exchange basis. This works out best for most. You still have to remove and remount the units and also have the rear aligned immediately or you could have major problems such as "dog tracking" and excessive tire wear.

As far as the interior and body goes, Not much has changed as I have been working on a major boat project all year. I needed to move to other areas as the Knoxville show is a great place to find used parts.

Here is a couple after. Correct paint, and finishes. Be very careful of bearing preload. You might want to check u-joints. This car has an extra leaf that was added at Motion. The bolts were too short. You may want to check that too. Yeah I know the diff is purple, Joel did it so it went back the same color. TIM

Hey Smooth!
Haven't heard from you in a while, glad to see you are still around.
I appreciate you posting the pictures, most folks don't know what all goes into doing stuff like this, heck, just cleaning all the stuff up and disassembly is a job in itself. You have to watch out and be careful not to break your caliper mounting brackets when taking these monsters apart, even with the correct tools.

Looks like a good job. I have done 6 frame off resto's myself, and I know how much a pain it can be to have the correct colors. Quanta Restorations is a great source fo exact color matching, especially if you are going for a Duntov award. I have one, but will never do another. Customs are the way to go, just please yourself.
We have a pretty extensive shim set and we are always careful with preload and on center sections watching the pinion depth to prevent roaring on acceleration/deceleration.
It is not always necessary, but I always replace u joints, as its so much easier to do it now, than on the side of the road later. Its a lot of stuff to remember, thats why its so expensive to have stuff done nowadays.:+

Wow!, Thanks for the photos, i think it's helping to understand it now. Purple differential cool! Is that chassis powder coated? Whats the white stuff on the leaf springs? Looks like a great job and i'm glad to see you posting again. So these are original color schemes to Motion or GM or both sence Motion was a company attached to a GM dealership?

Thanks for the photos and info Smooth and Randy

Chassis is paint. The leaf springs are gray primer, they were never painted. The only color that's not GM is diff. and engine. Here is an engine pic.It will be dynoed tues. I will put up a bunch of new pix next week after the engine is back in the chassis. Its been pretty insane here. we have 6 cars in progress. 2 are to be done for the super car reunion in sept. TIM

Tim- It's good to hear you back. I cant wait to see this thing done. I think I asked this before, but if you don't mind- how much is something like this costing to do?? Great work- the engine looks awesome. I'm to the point where it would be much easier just buying one done, or mostly done. As of yesterday, I am now officially unemployed, so this wont be in my near future. Please -someone buy my Camaro!!- Its a Silva car- that should be good for something. Keep in touch.

My camaro isn't an original older car. It is a full custom with a handmade body. Check out my owners page + click on the camaro link in the upper left corner. (Thanks David- again -NICE WORK!) I would love (and NEED) to sell it at this point. Thanks. And again- welcome back Tim.

yenko.net has a Motion section. They don't seem to be too interested in anything in the Motion section unless it is a Baldwin/Motion car. They make a little bit of approving noises when Smooth posts pictures of the Maco...

I've said positive things about Silva there now & then, but it seems to get no response... like I said, it has to be Baldwin/Motion...

No need to really speculate on it much...

Thats why I dont think they would be interested in my camaro. Thety are probably purists. I have to find that "one" person that wants something unique and wild.It is definately "one of a kind" I wish we could have finished it before John died. Oh well. Now I might have "all the time in the world " to do something with it.
