Over the holidays, my neighbor Roy and myself got the base repaired with some pieces I fabricated and replaced the top. Turned out pretty well for a couple of amatuers ! Once we got the top tacked in place, it was an eighth of an inch too high. So I stood on the top and pushed down from the ceiling while Roy finished welding up all the way around the rest of the way. Ended up being exactly where it was supposed to be !
I ended up cutting the corner of the body off to see what was underneath and man, I'm glad I did ! Randy had glassed over the smaller holes at the base of the windshield, but didn't realize there had been problems with this car from the beginning. With the top part of the body cut away, I exposed a can of worms. The front fiberglass cowl, where it's riveted to the birdcage had been screwed up at the factory.......... they missed hitting the top and had an oblong hole with the rivet sitting crooked, so water had always leaked in beside the rivet. There were globs of sealer loaded up that hid these areas, so I was able to expose 4 or 5 holes that would have leaked............ whew !!!
Now I've got to replace the body piece and get a new windshield installed and this little set-back will be over with !!!
